A World Beyond
I couldn’t paint a series celebrating the ocean without including my favourite, dolphins. There’s something so magical and joyful about them, and they’re creatures I’ll never tire of painting.
When I started this piece, I didn’t have a clear story in mind. I simply wanted to capture them moving through the otherworldly depths of the ocean, swimming together towards the light.
I’ve noticed that rays of light have become something of a motif and personal symbol within my work. There’s something about seeing light break through that has always filled me with awe. It can completely transform a place or a moment, making the world feel that little bit more magical. For me, they’ve come to represent that sense of wonder, but also hope and possibility, a light drawing you towards something more.
In this painting, the dolphins are swimming towards the light, beyond what we can see. Maybe that’s what A World Beyond has come to mean to me. Not knowing exactly what lies ahead, but believing there is still something beautiful to move towards.
