In Zulu, the Red-billed Hornbill is called “umkolwana”, meaning “believer.” This name comes from the fact that these birds are often seen staring upwards at the sky, even in times of storm and droughts.
After finishing a 100-painting challenge to break through creative block, this piece felt like a breath of renewal. I allowed myself to play—to layer abstract elements and subtle collage without overthinking. “The Believer” became a quiet reminder of faith, resilience, and the joy of creating freely again.
