Called by the Deep

I had this idea from the very start to paint this whale, it felt like the beginning of this entire ocean series, yet I saved it right till the end. I think some ideas just need time to brew, to exist quietly within us until they’re ready to come through.

I love the sense of majesty and wonder it evokes. The softness of the moonlight, the depth of the ocean... it has a way of pulling me in.

And this painting really did keep pulling me back. Every time I thought it was finished, it asked for more. More time, more care, more attention. There were moments I thought it might not come through at all.

It was originally called Luna Tides, but that never quite held what this piece became. Called by the Deep felt closer to what’s beneath the surface.
